    1. I think you can do this without rewriting that section.  Please try.
    A single-character file is a bad test case.  Try an actual file encoded
    in latin1.
    
    2. I split the exec test out of long0.
    
    3. Nothing can be bigger than 6000 bytes.
    File is careful only to read the first block of each file,
    to avoid tickling readahead on the worm file server.
    Also, the font test doesn't care as long as it gets 
    a single line from the file.  It doesn't need the whole thing.
    
    What do you mean by fixing fonts in /lib/font/bit?
